Simple switches for a greener home

Looking to be a little more environmentally conscious?

Check out these simple switches that can make your home a little more sustainable, apart from recycling.

By practicing these greener habits, you’ll also be saving more money in the long run.

After all, even the smallest changes can make a big difference!

Go Meatless on Mondays

Meatless Mondays are a thing, and it doesn’t have to be limited to just one day of the week either. By swapping out your regular meat dish for a protein-packed vegetarian dish, you can help reduce your carbon footprint and create a positive impact on the health of our planet. Try going meat-free one night this week. After all, one small change can make a big difference!

Energy Efficient Appliances

If you’re picking out your new oven or dishwasher, keep an eye out for the Energy Star label. Though they can cost slightly more than a regular appliance, the running costs of your new gadget will actually be less in the long run. Saving money and choosing a healthier option for the environment? Definitely a win-win!

Install Solar Panels

The cost of solar panels in Australia has greatly reduced in recent years. In fact, many would argue that solar panels are an essential feature for new homes. Though it is a long-term investment, just like your energy-efficient appliances, you actually end up saving more money in the long run whilst also reducing your carbon footprint. Plus if you plan on selling your home in the future, solar panels can also add value to your property.

Choose Green Cleaning Products

A great way to reduce your environmental impact (and save on your weekly grocery shop!)  is to make natural cleaning products at home. You’ll be amazed at all the things you can do with just white vinegar, leftover citrus peels, sea salt and baking soda. Plus, these DIY products are much better for you and your furry friends. How? Natural cleaning remedies actually reduce air pollution both indoors and out, minimising exposure to potential asthma and allergy triggers.

Save Water

One great way to reduce your environmental impact is by keeping an eye out for energy-saving options when choosing a new tap or showerhead. A simple switch to an aerated or low-flow showerhead can save both water and money. Making small, simple changes, such as turning off the tap as you brush your teeth is also a great way to conserve water.

Sell or Donate Clothes

We’re all guilty of having a pile of unwanted clothes wasting away in our cupboards. But as the old saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

When you throw out unwanted clothing, it all ends up in landfills, producing more toxic waste and higher greenhouse gas emissions.

So, instead of throwing away unwanted garments, why not give your clothes a second life? Donate them to your local op shop or, if you’re after a little extra money, sell them on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree!
